So I booked the ticket. An idea that only entered my head a few days ago has led me to part with £560 for a flight to LAX on the 8th March 2013 and returning on the 1st of April from Orlando.
I have a little over 3 weeks to get from A to B and intend to use my bike to do it.
Why? It sounds pretty hard and scares the hell out of me. It’s within the realms of possible whilst being on the cusp of insane.
So my training officially began last night, I went to the gym after work and did a Sufferfest 50 minute training video. I left dripping in sweat with wobbly legs. This is just the beginning. I’m not fooling myself, I’m going to have to get myself fitter than I’ve ever been to succeed in relentlessly cycling 140 miles each and every day for 3 weeks to make my return flight. Exciting!
The total milage is a little over 3000 miles the equivalent of cycling London to Paris 11 times. I’ll be crossing through 8 states, climbing mountains and dealing with all kinds of weather. I intend to camp most night and carry as little as possible. I’ll be doing it completely solo, self-funded, unaided but hopefully with a lot of support from friends, family and colleagues. I’ll be raising money for a chosen charity soon but want to get a few weeks of training under my belt so I feel more comfortable in knowing I can do it.
So my journey begins here.. join me with my training, equipment, logistics and freaking out on this blog.
